Ferries are often vital links in comprehensive logistic systems. Therefore their load capacity, operational speed, reliability and overall economy are important for the entire traffic system they serve.
Composites open a wide span of design and material options tuned to match the operational profile of individual ferries. To start with, they offer a weight reduction of typically 30 percent (compared to aluminium). This fact implies reduced fuel cost, high operational speed, high loading capacity and excellent life cycle economy. It also means favourably low levels of CO2 emission. An additional benefit is found in modest maintenance costs, since long-term durability is a hallmark of composite materials.
